The Marin Chinese Cultural Association Lion Dance Team

What we are:

Founded in 1979, The MCCA Lion Dance Team is a student troupe dedicated to fostering awareness and appreciation of Chinese culture through traditional Lion Dance. Over the years, we have performed for countless auspicious occasions: Lunar New Year celebrations, grand openings, weddings, birthdays, and anniversaries. Some of our major annual performances include the Marin County Fair, the Bay Area Discovery Museum’s Chinese New Year’s Celebration, Youth-In-Arts Performing Arts Series, the Asian Pacific Heritage Festival, and MCCA’s Chinese New Year’s Banquet.

Who we are:

We are 8 to 18-year olds of all ethnic backgrounds who share an interest in Chinese culture and traditions. We practice in San Rafael on Saturday mornings October thru February. In our practice sessions, we receive instruction in the movements of the lion and the accompanying music of drums, cymbals, and gong. We do not pay any fees for lessons, but—like any team—we commit to practice and to as many of the 30-40, mostly weekend, performances as we can.

Could you be a Lion Dancer?

You’ll never know until you try. Our only requirements are:

  • You must be at least 8 years old.
  • You must be a member of the Marin Chinese Cultural Association (annual dues $30/family).
  • You must try to attend all practices and performances, and
  • If you’re 10 or under, you must be accompanied by a parent to all practices and performances.
