Dear Members, Families and Friends;

Once again, I write this newsletter note in the afterglow of a fantastic Chinese New Year celebration dinner at San Rafael Community Center. It was a showcase of our diverse, compassionate community. This year's celebration of the Goat/Sheep/Ram was brought to life with a delicious dinner provided by Yet Wah, an impressive martial arts performance by 10,000 Victories of Fairfax, a stirring classical performance by prodigy cellist Ricki Wu, and the Chinese Dance School of SF with a remarkable display of costume, choreography, culture and heart. Our board member David Wong was the emcee, and did a great job of keeping us informed and laughing. But perhaps the best performance of all was the generosity of everyone who helped produce the event - with a team headed by star board
member Kim Luu, and those donated to our Education Fund. Thanks to those who donated and bid on silent auction items, and those who bought raffle tickets, the Asian Scholarship Fund* and our May Lee Scholarship generated enough seed fund money for next year's awards. Not to mention: Another board member, Yee Coleiro, won this year's grand prize $500 from the raffle. It was her birthday the next day! Great luck to start the New Year.

This year was particularly meaningful to me because my two daughters flew home from Seattle and New York to join my husband and my son to enjoy the celebration for the first time in over 10 years. My children all grew up within MCCA and attending the Chinese New Year Celebration, from crying at the firecrackers to playing cymbals with the Lion Dance. Now that they are grown adults, I am happy to have my family together to realize how important MCCA has been for our family tradition. It warms my heart to see children - on stage and in the audience - whose memories will be shaped by this event.

As I said on stage at the Celebration, we are always looking for new ideas and programs to enrich our organization. Besides emails, we now have a phone line that you can call to ask questions or share you thoughts with us. The phone number is 1-415-881-8038; don't hesitate to call us as we would love to connect with you! And if you haven't visited our website lately, please check it out! Send us your article or photos, we may be able to put them on our site!

We will have more information on our summer programs soon. But in the meantime, mark your calendar: The next CNY dinner will be on Saturday, February 20, 2016, the Year of the Monkey!

Happy spring to you all!

Denise Wear

*The auction proceeds were supposed to go to the scholarship fund in memory of Peter Stanek, but Jean Bee Chan preferred that the proceeds to go into the general Asian Scholarship Fund to benefit others. We love Pete the Angel, he is forever in our hearts.
